GHS Free EKG Screening on Thursday, February 1

Hi everyone!

Many of you may have already heard about the free EKG screening scheduled for Thursday, February 1, at GHS.  The screening is being sponsored by the Larsen Family through the Kristoffer Larsen Big Heart Foundation and Young Hearts for Life.

Kristoffer Larsen was a GHS student and cross-country runner. Sadly, the Larsen family was unaware that Kristoffer had a hidden heart condition that caused his heart to eventually be enlarged. At age 22, Kristoffer suffered a Sudden Cardiac Death. He, and about 1 in 300 youth have an undetected heart condition that puts them at risk for sudden cardiac death. A simple cardiac screening (EKG test) can identify youth at risk. Italy, unlike the United States, requires yearly EKG screenings for high school athletes: this has led to a 90% reduction in Sudden Cardiac Deaths.

The Larsen family is committed to establishing a long term and recurring free cardiac screening program at Geneva High School to help prevent Sudden Cardiac Death.

I am asking for your help in two ways:

1.  Register your child for the free ECG screening to be held on February 1

  • Students will be screened during their PE/Health or Drivers Ed class. If your student doesn’t have any of these classes, they will go to the main office prior to the event to be screened during the class most convenient for their schedule.
  • To sign your child up for this FREE screening, please go to www.YH4L.org. Click on the drop down button that says Registration & Events, then select Registration & Results.  Click on Chicago Region, then click on the Permission button to access the registration page.
  • NOTE: Each EKG is done privately in individual stalls separated by gender in the large gym with female on one side and males on the other. Students will NOT have to remove any clothing (electrodes are place under the shirt)

2.  Volunteer to help during the screening: (note: all volunteers must attend one of the training sessions that will be held on January 31, 2018)

  • Enter your email address: (You will NOT need to register an account on SignUp.com)
  • Sign up! Choose your spots. Be sure to sign up for your training session as well as the shift you will work at the screening. Please consider joining us for the entire day. I will be there for both the morning and afternoon session! SignUp.com will send you an automated confirmation and reminders.

Thank you so much for considering. The students will hear presentations about the screening this Thursday – look for more information to come home this week. I hope to see you and your kids at the screening!
